in order to address a problem here, we need to be able to reproduce it outside
of the macports build system - and / or to identify what build conditions cause
the problem.

In the meantime, I will try a rosetta build of powerpc-apple-darwin9 for
gcc-15.3-darwin (which is the current release supporting aarch64).
