Proposed fix with python autoconf test and linking fix
Thanks for the python autoconf suggestion.
Here is a revised patch which includes the suggested python autoconf test with
small modifications. I've also fixed a linking bug. Next I need to fix the
dependencies. Boottrapped on freebsd15 and debian x86_64 both with and without
Python3.
