--- Comment #4 from Simon Sobisch <simonsobisch at gnu dot org> --- Just throwing in the compiler/dialect view: different implementations do this differently - which is expected when the standard says that's implementor defined (most likely: there was already a difference when the standard wrote that rule). While this does not give the complete picture the "global" difference is "DISPLAY as stored" or "DISPLAY as human-readable". IBM and most mainframes do the first, many PC environments at least default to human-readable. GnuCOBOL added a dialect option "pretty-display" for this, which is set depending on the used std (which is different from gcobol's -dialect, which takes multiple values - I'd expect "whatever dialect came last" to set the DISPLAY style). Side note: IBM provides access to Enterprise COBOL via the Open Mainframe courses.
