In any case, don't use the version that comes with GMP.
It is old and *many* bugs have been fixed since. And the
API has changed (it has been stable since version 2.0.2,
AFAIK).

For several reasons. Mainly because MPFR is still in its early days
(well, perhaps not as of 2.2.0), and thus we have more often bug
fixes and various improvements.
