I'm on MacOSX 10.3

The -Werror kills it.
Once I deleted -Werror out of the makefiles...

I don't know how you would tweak the configure to kill this -Werror for
mac but that would do it.
The -Werror flag will not be used in the final release, so it should work
for you.
