Do you use the http: or git: protocol for cloning?  The official gcc git
repo only supports the "old" git http: protocol, which is almost useless
on slow/high-latency networks...

[There's also a github mirror, and github supports the "smart" http:
protocol:  https://github.com/mirrors/gcc.git ]
