The former are defined by bash. If I made your change, [ $ver = ?.?.?
] would never be true, because ?.?.? is not a GCC version.

With Bash [[ $ver == ?.?.? ]] doesn't do word splitting etc. and
matches the RHS as a glob patttern, which is exactly what I want it to
do.
