For me it would be great if my proposed enhancement in ticket 3129

It would make a big difference in our daily work, if a standardized
direction on contours were present.
We would be happy to do tests on any changes made, as my patch beares
evidence that I do not do much C++ programming these days.

I have skimmed the patch and it looks reasonable. I have assigned this
to Chaitanya to incorporate in trunk, update tests, docs, etc.
