Thanks for your reply. Your points about the cache switches make sense as they now seem to be making a difference to the amount of memory used whereas before they seemed to do nothing. Sadly, the conversion is still failing at the same point as before even with the new FWTools package. I've also tried on another machine and with another file JP2 which both fail in the same way indicating that the fault is something generic to the JPEG2000 to ECW process.
I've read about the 500mb limit, could this be an issue?
