I just noticed from your ticket [http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/3681] that you are using GDAL 1.6.3. Right?
A lot has changed since then. I run the same sequence of options as you and everything works fine in GDAL 1.8dev. I believe it should work fine with the current released version too. GDAL 1.7.2. Please update it and try again.
