I have just returned from the Reptile & Exotic animal
expo in Raleigh with a U. henkeli and while I read up
on them as much as possible beforehand I have a bunch
of questions (imagine that!)
First, I have seen a variety of temperatures
mentioned, some of which seemed a bit high. What do
they prefer? 65-75F? Day/night?
Humidity range? About 80%? Higher? Right now for
humidity, beside misting, I have set up a water dish
with an airstone and airpump to help with humidity.
The aquarium has a screen lid--should I cover it
partially with plastic to keep up humidity?
They need UVB, right? I can't seem to find Reptisun
5.0 around here, is there another brand I can use, or
is it safe to order tube lights (ie, do they ship in
one piece)?
Food--do recently shipped animals usually want to eat
right away, or are they a bit too stressed? What is
the range of food you suggest as a staple diet? I
have crix, superworms and mealworms on hand, and can
get grasshoppers from my herb garden (I don't use any
pesticides for just that reason).
I'm almost done. Just how big DO they get? I've
heard varying reports. How big a tank will they need
finally? I only have the one now, but I plan to get a
second eventually. How much space will I need for
two? For just the one?
What about perches--how big should they be? Do these
guys hang out on tree trunks or branches? (Both?)
Vertical or horizontal (primarily)? Plants?
Last question. How handleable are they? I was
expecting something like my Phelsuma for some reason,
but they don't seem that, well, spastic. Is that an
illusion due to their slower speed? How fast can they
move?
OK, that's all for tonight. I'm sure I'll have more by
tommorrow.
Thanks so much!!!
Camille
