The photo was not fixed by special effects or doctored.  As Jon explains it,
he was laying flat on his back in a kid's pool (in the gecko room and not
outside).  About a dozen people were above him laying the various geckos on
Jon at the same time.  When the photographer, who was standing over Jon,
yelled "go" everyone pulled back leaving the array of geckos on Jon.  The
photographer had a automatic advance feature on his camera so dozens of
photos were shot in a manner of seconds.
