Hi guys,

I've just had a look at the release schedule for the next Ubuntu release
(Jaunty), and I would really like gEDA 1.6.0 to be included.

This means we need 1.6.0 released at the end of January / very early
February, since we would have to get it packaged and included in
Debian / Ubuntu before the feature freeze date of February 19th.

I want 1.6.0 to be as good as we possibly can make it, but there is an
argument that a 1.6.0 sooner, with the odd (minor) bug would be better
than waiting to get everything perfect and missing the packaging
deadline.

Once we've got 1.6.0 in the door before the feature freeze, incremental
updates 1.6.1, 1.6.2 can be accepted much later in the process, with a
freeze around March 19th, and a final freeze at April 9th.

There is quite a bit of work to do before then:

I think we can make it if we try.

There are quite a few tasks under the 1.5.2 and 1.6.0 headings which can
be fixed as nice "first project" type coding tasks, and some which
aren't coding related at all, such as checking and updating the shipped
symbols.

I'm confident that I can land the drawing fixes, and (probably optional)
cairo rendering during that time. (My main remaining issue is rendered
text extents).

Why should we care about Ubuntu and its release schedule?

1. Because I say so ;)

2. Because we care about our users, we want to make sure those who get
software from distribution packages are able to use a reasonably
up-to-date and bug free version.

3. Its a major distribution which it would appear that a lot of our new
users are favouring. 1.4.x is a good stable version of gEDA, but I'd
really like that more of our user base gets to see the shiny goodness
that will be 1.6.x.

4. I suspect other distributions are on a similar schedule, since they
all pretty much lock-step with GNOME and Xorg releases etc..

Best wishes,
