Signed, unsigned, real, long, string, .... These are all types that are seen a lot in Verilog programs, and can be treated atomically so long as the program doesn't do things like part selects on them. But synthesis would eliminate these types from the netlist, I suppose. So from thta perspective, maybe it will never come up.
