Hello all!

It's been a while since there's been a gem5 announcement. I apologize if
you get multiple copies of this email, but I'm trying to cast a wide net
with this announcement.

I'd like announce a new project: RE-gem5. RE-gem5 is a directed effort to
rejuvenate the underlying infrastructure of gem5. RE-gem5 is not a new
simulator or a new project; it is a project to enhance and support the
current gem5 infrastructure. This project will enhance and rejuvenate the
aging gem5 community infrastructure through improvements to the underlying
gem5 components, community outreach and improved user services, and
developing new models for emerging devices required for evaluating
important applications.

As one of the first steps in this project, we are looking for community
feedback on our near- and medium-term roadmap. The following is a link to a
Google Doc that anyone can comment and make suggestions.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fv01HavfkIIqfcgZoKUpojkUKkWujxspRCcvS5cTfkk/edit?usp=sharing

The purpose of this roadmap is twofold. 1) We want to get feedback to see
what other features the community would like and whether our current
priorities are aligned with the community. And 2) We want to broadcast to
the community that changes are coming.

RE-gem5 is giving the gem5 community access to new resources which will
accelerate the development of gem5. Expect that the first 6 months to 1
year will be focused on improving gem5's underlying infrastructure and
making it easier to use. Then, after we have repaired the foundation, we
will start working on exciting new features.

I'm excited to be leading this project. Please feel free to comment on our
roadmap or reach out to me personally (ja...@lowepower.com) with any
feedback positive or negative. I'm looking forward to seeing the research
produced by our community with gem5 over the next 15 years!

Cheers,
Jason and the gem5 PMC
