So far the floppy drive hasn't recovered,  but I haven't removed it and checked
out the jumpers.
Tried again on install, and, using the LSU CDs got through install.  There was
an error early on, but I couldn't catch the text spread out on the screen.  It
went through installing 519 packages, asked a few questions, made a boot
floppy, and started to reboot.  It gets through the list of devices and hangs.
Tried reset several times, with the same result.  Perhaps this is progress; at
least it keeps me busy.  Afraid I'm not going to be the poster boy for building
one's own Linux box anytime soon, but I'm building character.
