If you do decide to recompile your kernel, there is a good doc in 
/usr/doc/Linux-HOWTO folder called kernel-howto. This should get you 
started. I recommend buying the book: "Linux in a Nutshell" That book, 
though slightly out of date, explains most of the underpinnings of Linux. 
That book and man pages are my best friends. As for a good DVD viewing 
program, I recommend Xine. You can find it at xine.sourceforge.net. You will 
probably have to compile it though, there are rpm's for it but putting xine 
into rpm format is done by a different group I think and they aren't as 
current if memory serves me correctly. I haven't tried to view a DVD as I 
don't have a DVD player yet, but it renders MPEG, avi, and Video CD's very 
well and it's suppose to do DVD so I don't think that will be a problem.
