There were some bugs and security holes in 7.0 that were fixed in subsequent
releases. If you bring a couple of blank CDs to the next meeting, I'll give
you a copy of RedHat 7.2.

I don't have much (any?) experience with SUSE, but I've heard good things
about it. There are some nice features of RH7.0+, such as the installer. But
as I mentioned, 7.0 and 7.1 were kinda buggy. I know one guy who refused to
run anything beyond RH6.2 in a production environment where we worked
because of those bugs (hey Dustin!). :)

I use RH7.2 at home and work and think it does the job with minimal fuss,
though one beef I do have with RH distros is that the default install, uh,
installs lots of stuff I don't use or need. Debian, and soon Gentoo, Linux
are better for minimal installs but of course require more software to be
installed as it is needed. Hence, those distros have really good software
package management apps.
Another good point about minimal install distros is that you can more easily
learn what is necessary to make Linux go.

Here are some good links for learning the guts of Linux:

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ - just what it says: compile and install
all of the Linux OS from source code.
http://rute.sourceforge.net/ - Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition. Nice and
very comprehensive tutorial on the Linux OS.

(hey John B., how about adding a "Learning" category to the www.brlug.net
Links area and adding the two links above?)

Go nutz.
