Apt-get does want to do most of it for you. That is the unmet dependancy cure. Any configuration that is optional will be presented to you for your selection. The things that HAVE to be done, are done by apt-get. It is almost idiot proof. I have screwed it up a few times, but usually by telling it to run i the kernel instead of as a module before I had it running the way I wanted it to.
