I read frequently (RSS feed)
a Good Clean Tech website.
I believe a week or 2 ago sharp announced they were able to cut cost of
manufacturing solar panels by 50%.
Also, some of the MIT dudes have developed very efficient way of
storing solar power in a form of Hydrogen. Nasty side effects being
oxygen.....
One of the current articles (Linux related)

I would set up solar panels on my house in an instan if I would have
money to do so..... (top of my roof goes north-south direction, thus
being optimal)
Current tax incentives are 50% for doing that (up to $25.000)

Speaking of wind power, this was mentioned on slashdot today:

Maybe a sign that wind power is getting cheaper?

Wind power is more expensive than solar!! But yea, it seems like the
hottest and sunniest days are right after the storm when we have no power
haha.
Speaking of... i've been reading that solar panels get less efficient the
hotter they get. Which is a concern, cause i'd think it gets pretty damn
hot on my roof...

If the root cause of your power failure is generally going to be a
hurricane (I'm assuming here), isn't solar a possibly bad choice? You
would have several days of no real sun.
Now, wind power may be the way to go here! :)
You should do a OLPC box that runs off wind power and demonstrate it to us.

Has anyone used one of those before? For $25 it's worth a try, i
wonder if it can charge faster than the battery would get used?
That unit is fairly cheap, seems like you can get a larger solar board
that could def charge faster than a few items would use.
The one above is 2watts, this one is 5watts:

it's only $50.
here's a 15watt for $130.

a 60 watt for $375!

and a 12watt for about $100...

So, i don't know much about calculating needed watts... how many watts
or amps would be needed to run a laptop and a cable modem?
Then we can figure out which charger we need...
