Hi Danny, It is told that MarkLogic runs faster on Linux compared to Windows, though we have no performance tests to confirm this.
Regarding bare-metal versus VMs, a lot has changed in latest versions, and is still changing with regard to (official) support. MarkLogic seems to run stable on most VM platforms, but the official support list is still relatively short: http://developer.marklogic.com/products/marklogic-server/requirements-8.0. Latest addition is AWS. Running MarkLogic in AWS has great benefits regarding automatic scale up/down, but it comes with extra management cost, and requires good knowledge about AWS CloudFormation scripts. You may also want to look at the pricing model: http://www.marklogic.com/what-is-marklogic/pricing/ Kind regards, Geert From: <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> on behalf of Danny Sinang <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Reply-To: MarkLogic Developer Discussion <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Date: Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 9:33 PM To: general <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Subject: [MarkLogic Dev General] Pros and cons of running MarkLogic on different platforms We are considering moving MarkLogic from a Windows 2012 Server platform to RedHat Linux for : 1. Less frequent need for OS patching (I think) 2. Less or even no reboots after pacthing 3. Presumed stability 4. Easier matching of ML docs to actual configurations 5. Easier automation via SSH 6. Out-of-the-box ability to do tail on logs Besides these, are there other notable benefits for running ML on Linux ? Any observed drawbacks ? Also, has anyone here decided to go bare-metal instead of using VM's ? If so, what were your reasons and observed benefits for doing so ? Regards, Danny
