Ok... this is getting strange:

(1) The behavior of the system under the debugger conflicts with my
understanding of how the J engine functions, and

(2) That this behavior exists is seen J807 shows that it's not a
consequence of J90x changes, and

(3) That this behavior is reproducible by people other than myself
shows it's not due to a flaw specific to only my machine, and

(4) That we have seen replies to this forum showing the issue occurs
under both Darwin and Windows shows that this is not an OS-specific
issue

...

That leaves open increasingly implausible suggestions for what's going
on here (such as targeted pranks, of some sort, or severe
incomprehension of how J functions on my part), but I don't know how
to isolate such issues.
