ever the diplomat :-)

kaffe is fine but myself (and most Java folks i talked to about it)
found the GCJ stuff absolutely dreadful

(Apache and RMS saw Java a little differently: an opportunity as
opposed to a trap. Apache has always been confident in our ability to
- if necessary - develop a new virtual machine, so saw no reason not
to develop FOSS for the platform.)

this is just a technical problem, and could be easily enough be fixed
if communication channels were established (for example, over in
James, we use maven local repositories)

AIUI repository arrangement should be pluggable. perhaps it might be
possible to create a simple patch that could be used by the distros.

cool

anyone have any contacts over there?

the advantage of being the upstream is that it's usually easier for us
to get stuff developed than the distros so long as we understand what
they need.
