thanx for the responses guys. I am going to be using a completely free software stack, so debian is still an option (and yes, i too am in love with apt-get). I already have the debian stable CDs, but does any of you know where i can get RHEL and Suse CDs from (if there is some place inside the country that sells them??)? and how much do they cost?

it depends on what services you want to run on it.
afaik oracle products exclusively run on redhat or
suse, debian isn't officially supported. i bet it's
the same for ibm, sap, or any proprietory vendor's
product line. of course with redhat/suse you also get
professional support service, so you can play the
blame game with them if anything breaks.

however if you're running a free software stack,
apache, mysql, postgresql then debian is well up to
the task.

i guess the same goes for slackware, as debian.
however keeping it updated and patched is a bit of a
hassle. plus the debian repositories are a blessing to
have.
