it depends on what services you want to run on it.
afaik oracle products exclusively run on redhat or
suse, debian isn't officially supported. i bet it's
the same for ibm, sap, or any proprietory vendor's
product line. of course with redhat/suse you also get
professional support service, so you can play the
blame game with them if anything breaks.
however if you're running a free software stack,
apache, mysql, postgresql then debian is well up to
the task.
i guess the same goes for slackware, as debian.
however keeping it updated and patched is a bit of a
hassle. plus the debian repositories are a blessing to
have.
