I totally agree .. I remember once there was this system on UNIX platform that you had to push hundreds of thousands of files through ftp and it took like 5 hours and then the system hungup .. the best thing we did afterwards was to tar the collection of files and then push it using ftp ... but I still insist on the fact that usually the bottleneck is the Hard Drive I/O Speed in this case ...due to the fact that a lot of operations take place like Ammar said :)
