I read an article recently that stated a disk maker - maybe Samsung - plans to make flash-memory enhanced drives very soon. Unfortunately, they'll be working with Microsoft to optimize them to work with Vista so this may limit your choice of OS for a while if you want to use these. One of the advantages of flash-enhanced disks is for dramatic reduction of power-consumption on laptops though there will probably be performance improvements as well.

They have been doing it a long time in the pocket pcs so it is only natural to have them in the PCs too. Having the OS on a Flash and at least the paging swaps would make the laptops less vulnarable to most of the diskproblems when the laptop is on the move and the less the diskmovements are needed the better.
