I have no problem with your being a leftist and my being a rightist.
If you are a leftist who does not believe that the govt should play a
'big role in our lives,' then I must confess that I find you to be a
most unusual leftist. Perhaps you might define your beliefs more
accurately than I can.
Yes, I consider high taxation to be "funds that can be ripped off from
the rest of us," and I don't consider that to be a low blow. Perhaps
you do not believe in high taxation, but I can assure you that most of
your leftest compatriots do indeed believe in high taxation. I, and at
least some others, believe that high taxation itself is a low blow.
I don't find the remainder of what I said to be conservative
propaganda. Leftists do indeed stress the importance of the government
role in our lives (funded by taxes, of course) and conservatives do
stress the importance of individual responsibility with taxes held to
a strict minimum.
I'm very much a middle of the road person. I'm not fond of terms like
"ultra-conservative religious zealot" (technically speaking, that
could be considered trolling) nor would it be helpful to respond with
terms like "bed wetting pinko communist." I'm not a very rel;igious
person, but, unlike you, I can tolerate those who hold strong
religious convictions, and I don't believe that anyone needs to hide
their religious opinions. I despise both the rabid far leftists and
the rabid far rightists. Some of my favorite people are Christians or
Jews or atheists. Unfortunately I don't have any close associates who
are Muslim or nature religious or Buddhists, so I cannot comment on
these.
The one trait of the leftists (I sincerely hope that you are not in
this camp) which I am least fond of is the desire to suppress opposing
points of view. I can cite a few examples, but their number is legion.
All too frequently universities invite leading leftists to speak but
raise a major stink when conservatives are invited. The appearance of
the Michael Moore propaganda (my opinion, not the world's opinion)
film during the presidential campaign was welcomed by the press and
the Kerry campaign. When a counter film was produced describing the
hundreds of (at the very least) inaccuracies in Moore's film, the
Kerry campaign took legal action to prevent its showing.
Let's keep the discussion civil and the epithets minimal.
