Personally, I'd love to see ruby go into /usr rather than /opt however
looking at the way their installer "works", it doesn't respect FHS in any
way, dumping everything into "ruby-enterprise-1.8.7-2010.01/" within the
install prefix.

So the only 2 solutions I see are:
1) Ruby start respecting FHS in their packaging/installation routine.
2) We symlink the appropriate binaries etc to /usr in the mean time.
