So far inaccessible. In order to stack the deck I first ran alsamixer on
an existing linux installation and used the qwe keys to increase the
master volume which turned out to be the first control. The speakers got
louder.
Then I booted the install-x86_64-minimal and repeated the procedure after
having run speaker-test to test if I got through the boot and up to root.
Then I ran instructions to add speakup_soft to
/etc/modules-load.d/espeakup.conf,
next emerge espeakup alsa-utils
next edit /etc/conf.d/alsasound and add
SAVE_ON_STOP="yes"
to end of file and save file.
espeakup.conf also got saved.
Then rc-update add alsasound boot then
rc-update add espeakup default
Then I tried:
/etc/init.d/espeakup start
and all the rest was silence as usual.
Maybe gentoo alternate installation will work, I'll find out probably
later this week.
If I get it done, I'll need some help cleaning the pre-existing linux
system off the computer so gentoo can actually boot and talk.
I've given up on the install minimal disks.
