You might be interested in checking out sylpheed-claws instead of
thunderbird for your GUI mail client.  I'm probably going to switch over
to it myself sooner or later - sooner if I can figure out a way to
migrate mailboxes from thunderbird.  But anyway, I checked just now, and
sylpheed-claws does have an Ignore Thread / Unignore Thread option.
Unfortunately at first glance its threading seems to be not quite as
robust as thunderbird's, but that may be due to sylpheed-claws not
having all the previous messages in the thread.
