Yes, now it is not in the portage since it was replaced along with
nvidia-kernel by nvidia-drivers. My guess is that you have nvidia-kernel
and/or nvidia-glx installed before the replacement took place. So, now
they are installed but not in the portage. That is why I proposed you to
"unmerge" them by "emerge -C"

Followed your steps and on the modprobe line received the following
'FATAL: Error inserting nvidia
(/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r9/video/nvidia.ko): Invalid module format'
