Meir, If you're familiar with PCREs, take a look at the following

This is an attachment to bug 9670 which pertained to the old
gentoo-stats. Search in the attachment for get_cpus_alpha. Note: The
regex is made up primarily of zero-width forward lookahead assertions to
allow the fields to appear in any order in cpuinfo. This technique
might be useful to you in your new tool (although your tool might
already be advanced well beyond needing such a tweak!)
