Hmm, I don't think this is true - the kernel pays no attention to
/etc/fstab when mounting the root filesystem (obviously - / isn't
mounted), so the worst that can happen is that you're stuck with a
readonly / and no /usr, /var, and /home. Now, this isn't a lot of fun,
true, but it's definitely bootable and repairable - that's the point of
the root filesystem.
