According to comment 1 also upstream does not seem to test non-pam use cases all that often. I have the impression that all this fuzz around bug 524074 could have been handled in a much more civilized manner... "Are users forced to use PAM?" - we might want to inform upstream (politely) that we still support non-pam use cases. Otherwise the dependency might become mandatory.
