A wild guess: is the parent pointing to ..? If so, does that point to a
valid profile? If you use the default prefixed profile from the
prefixed-tree and put your profile in ${PREFIX}/etc/portage/profile does
that work? (That's what I did in the end, because that was as
convenient to me.)
