pathspec?

Cool... this still appears to be listed as a long term goal. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/portage/index.xml?style=printable

Is this implemented already? Where can I find more information on this?

Talk to pvdabeel. He's the one and only person working on pathspec AFAIK. Last I talked to him, he set a February 30 release date.

slots?

Slots are good, but they aren't used normally for application oriented packages. And where they are used, the granularity is way too coarse.

Plus they need developer attention to work, which doesn't put power in the
hands of the user.

For example, with stow, if I want to take on the burden of compiling everything
myself, I can install any package at any granularity, even the same
version with different compile options, all at the same time, and chose
at runtime. That's not possible with portage, which is unfortunate since
all the build knowledge is in the ebuild files, and I'd like to make
use of that.

Sounds interesting, but I don't see much of a use for it personally. Then again, I'm more the set-it-up-and-leave-it-the-bloody-hell-alone kind of guy.
