While on the topic, I felt the urge to revive a past idea of mine.
If one were to write a DTD (or schema) that defines a schema for writing
configurationfiles in xml. The common language would make it possible to
even write generic configuration GUIs, such as webmin and friends, that
could parse all kinds of configuration files without prior knowlege.
That is: Generic DTD (Schema) -> Application Configuration Schema -> Application Configuration XML
One could even provide language extension to be able to generate manpages from the same sourcefile.
