[ Results for search key : lolo ] [ Applications found : 0 ] This FAQ http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=24634 dated November last year says that "lolo-sources: [is] the testbed for Gentoo-sources". I would be inclined to the view, as you suggest, that someone by the name of Pfeifer has taken on the task of developing them in the last few months. > Also emerge --help and man emerge still shed no light on what the > various flags mean (e.g. what is the "-" in the "U-" ??) Hnmmmn... `man emerge` tells me: [ebuild U-] x11-base/xfree-4.3.0 [4.2.99.902] The - represents lack of SLOT information about Xfree. This will occur when the previous version emerged was injected (see inject for more info) or very outdated (so old that SLOT did not exist). Either way, a newer version of Xfree is availabe for your updating delight. So in this case, perhaps the - is indicating of the name change, or that the 2.4.20.2_pre4 has become masked. I guess what I'm telling you is that any of us can make about as educated guess as you can. Furthermore, I find that this list http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/devlist.xml shows: pfeifer Jay Pfeifer San Antonio Core system/kernel Perhaps you should drop Pfeifer a quick email. But I recommend that you don't whine about "detailed descriptions in the gentoo docs about ...kernel version[s] [being] long overdue". As with any free software, if you don't like the documentation, the onus is on YOU to do some research & write some. Perhaps you could volunteer some of your time to Pfeifer when you contact him. The FAQ I gave a link to above appears to be a month or two out of date, but perhaps this http://forums.gentoo.org/ viewtopic.php?t=37557&highlight=gentoo+sources+faq thread has more information for you. I have this idea that the downgrade from "2.4.20.2_pre4" to "2.4.20.1_pre1" may be related to the first result in this http://forums.gentoo.org/search.php?mode=results search, so it might also be worthwhile for you to read the thread on "Local Root Hole - Current gentoo-sources vulnerable" first thing.
