I tried winex-cvs instead of winex and got it compiled correctly. I ran 'winex-cvs' and had it setup my fake windows dir. I then edited my ~/.winex-cvs/config. When I try to run a program, i get:
wine: lstat /root/.winex-cvs/wineserver-upstairs.home/socket : No such file or directory
