Maybe also use the -i option on the old version so portage
thinks it's installed.

Just do an:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge openbox
edit /var/cache/edb/world and change the line that reads:
x11-wm/openbox
and change it to:
=x11-wm/openbox-2.3.0
then do:
emerge -P openbox
