Samba on Gentoo obviously uses LDAP for authentication. Is there any way to stop if from doing that?

I know that. I've compiled Samba from sources for several years.
If I go the LDAP route, I want to use it for most if not all authentication, be it Samba or shell.

Already tried that before I asked. Doesn't help if I want to make use of the samba that's in portage.
