My laptop's (Dell Latitide C810) harddrive is significantly slower than
my desktop, but I still think I get a fairly decent speed compared to
the OP - shouldn't he expect more?

root>hdparm -tT /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  0.74 seconds =172.97 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  3.54 seconds = 18.08 MB/sec

root>hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  0 (default 16-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    =  8 (on)
 geometry     = 2432/255/63, sectors = 39070080, start = 0

(These are default settings upon bootup)
