There is on www.gentoo.org a document which explains all about Desktop 
configuration, and has a section for nvidia kernel. It should work just fine. 
Anyways, what you could do is remove the package nvidia-kernel and try to 
emerge it again. That should work too!
Also, there is another document (on www.gentoo.org too) which is a kind of 
troubleshouting guide for nvidia cards users.
