What I did in debian was I just made a bash script
which says:

#!/bin/bash

#1st dir with fonts
xset fp+ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/freefont
#2nd dir with fonts
xset fp+ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/sharefont
xset fp rehash

And I ran it everytime I wanted to work on THE GIMP :)
