It doesn't really matter which version you have when you install from stage 1. Since you seem not to like that, you should take the best fitting actual version, which is the generic (i guess its i386 or even i586, but that wouldn't matter) stage3 for you. Since you son't want to recompile, i would strongly vote against taking the older i686-optimized-stage3 from 1.4_rc2 (that was AFAIK the last rc where they build all stages).
