Hi,

I installed gentoo a while ago already.

The first part of the boot goes fine, and then when it switches
to level 5, my screen becomes gray for at least one or two minutes
before i can see the X login screen. It is working fine but it just
takes forever.

Note that I am using 'kdm'. I tried to swicth to 'xdm' to see
if this was related but it just does not work at all with xdm.

What can be the cause?
The display manager?
My X server?
My XF86Config config file?

Check the logs luke ! (in /var/log/XFree86.0.log )

I am not really an export in X configuration file.

I have been looking around for a few tips and here
what I got:

1. Looking at /var/log/kdm.log, I found the following:

=> there are a couple of things which I don't understand
and that may be related to the cause of my problem:

. I can see in this log file that it is using /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
However there is no such file:

Also it says that the 'Build Operating System' is Linux 2.4.8-26mdk
which is not the case. I think the confufion comes from the fact that
I have two disks. I have mandrake installed on hda, and gentoo on hdb.
My lilo.con is on hda and looks like the following:

boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b vga=normal default=linux-2.4.8 keytable=/boot/us.klt lba32 prompt timeout=50 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.8 label=linux-2.4.8 root=/dev/hda1 append=" devfs=mount quiet hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" vga=788 read-only image=/boot/gentoo-2.4.20 label=gentoo-2.4.20 root=/dev/hdb3 append="devfs=mount quiet hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" vga=788 read-only other=/dev/fd0 label=floppy unsafe

Note that this gray screen does not occur when I boot linux-2.4.8.
Also I used as a starting point the XF86Config I had for mandrake
to build the one for gentoo.

-> It seems there is a confusion here but I don't see what I did wrong?

. At the end of this kdm.log it is written Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config' which is not consistent with what was written previously?

. It seems it is trying all the modelines. Can it be the reason
why it is so slow, but ends up working fine?

How can I debug that?

Thanks,

S.
