probably in the near future there will be KDE 3.1.3 available for

I'm just curious: what will happen when I then call an emerge kde?

Will all old settings be preserved, the old KDE sources+binaries be
overwritten by the new KDE and the system be as stable as before?

Going on past experience, the new one will be installed in /usr/kde/3.1.3 and the current one will coexist. Don't worry about your personal settings - they will be preserved.

All Versions of KDE 3.1 should be in /usr/kde/3.1. As these are mostly bigfixes it doesn't make any sense to have 3.1.2 and 3.1.3.
The configs will normally not be changed by this update. The only problem I had was losing my saved session (I think the update form rc6 to 3.1).
