Could you please provide the output of "emerge info" on your computer?  
as seen in this line:

gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.. -DG_LOG_DOMAIN=\"Sylpheed\"   
-I../intl       -I/usr/include/gtk-1.2 -I/usr/include/glib-1.2
-I/usr/lib/glib/include -I/usr/X11R6/include              
-I/usr/include/gdk-pixbuf-1.0 -I/usr/include/gtk-1.2
-I/usr/include/glib-1.2 -I/usr/lib/glib/include -I/usr/X11R6/include    


it uses gtk 1.2  and glib 1.2 (so you don't have USE="gtk2" set..) 
Which makes me curious as to what setup you have.. I tested all
combinations of USE flags avaiable (took some hours)  and all worked
locally....  so, please provide with more info.
