gpm is in the default use flags so to not use gpm you need to have "-gpm" in 
your use flags.

As for what is trying to pull it in, try "emerge -evp world | grep '+gpm'". 
When I do it, I find xemacs and giftcurs. I'm yet to figure what is pulling 
in xemacs, but I like it in giftcurs because I can then use the mouse in a 
kterm.
