I think, there IS no "default kernel" in gentoo - i'm pretty sure you mean the gentoo-sources (which you by mistake think is "default"). Please choose any other kernel-tree, like -ac or the vanilla-sources if you insist on using 2.4.22 - though I don't see any important reason for changing from 2.4.20....
